A Five-Minute Gua Sha Ritual for Morning Puffiness

A Five-Minute Gua Sha Ritual for Morning Puffiness

Some mornings call for less product and more pause. A cool gua sha stone, clean skin, and five unhurried minutes can help your face feel refreshed while giving the day a calmer beginning.

This ritual is designed for light, comfortable movement. It is not about pressing harder or changing the shape of your face. The intention is simply to support a gentle self-care practice you can repeat.

What you will need

  • A clean facial gua sha stone with smooth, chip-free edges
  • A freshly cleansed face
  • A few drops of facial oil or a comfortable layer of moisturiser for glide
  • A mirror and five quiet minutes

Before you begin

Wash your hands and tool, then apply enough slip that the stone moves without pulling the skin. Hold the gua sha almost flat against the face rather than using the narrow edge at a steep angle.

Think slow, light, and repeatable. A comfortable ritual is more valuable than a forceful one.

The five-minute sequence

1. Begin at the neck

Use the long edge of the stone to make three to five soft downward passes along the side of the neck, avoiding the front of the throat. This creates a relaxed starting point before moving to the face.

2. Move from the centre of the chin

Place the curved edge at the centre of the chin and glide outward toward the ear. Keep the pressure light and repeat three to five times on each side.

3. Sweep across the cheeks

Start beside the nose and move outward toward the temple. Support the skin lightly with your free hand if that makes the movement feel smoother. Let each pass take a full breath.

4. Be especially gentle beneath the eyes

Use the smallest curve of the tool and barely-there pressure. Glide from the inner under-eye area toward the temple once or twice. Skip this area entirely if the skin feels sensitive.

5. Finish across the forehead

Move from the centre of the brow upward toward the hairline, then sweep from the centre of the forehead toward each temple. End with one final light pass down the sides of the neck.

After the ritual

Rinse the stone with mild soap and lukewarm water, dry it completely, and store it somewhere protected from chips. If you enjoy a cooling sensation, keep the tool in a clean, dry place rather than directly in the freezer.

Consistency matters more than duration. Two or three mindful sessions a week may feel more useful than a long routine you rarely want to repeat. Explore the Chi Cleanse tool collection to find a shape that feels comfortable in your hand.

A note on comfort

Gua sha should not hurt. Stop if you notice sharp discomfort, persistent redness, or irritation. Avoid using the tool over broken, sunburned, or actively inflamed skin, and seek guidance from a qualified professional when you have a skin or health concern.
